What a good one does
Updated
A good missed-call text goes out within a minute, says who you are and makes one clear offer: a call back or a reply by text. Keep it to one message with no sales pitch, include a STOP line, and wait for the customer to reply before texting again. No FCC rule says a missed call counts as consent, so their reply is what keeps the conversation safe.

Rules that apply.In plain words.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Each row links to the official source.
- FCC: Stop unwanted robocalls and texts (consent for texts)
- 47 CFR 64.1200: the TCPA rules, including opt-out words and the 10-business-day limit
- FCC rule effective November 25, 2026 on how customers revoke consent
- CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices (May 2023)
- A2P 10DLC registration for business texting (Twilio docs)
Mistakes to avoid. We see these often.
- Sending a second text before the customer has replied to the first.
- Adding a coupon or promotion to the first reply. That makes it a marketing text, which needs signed written consent.
- Texting from a local number that isn't registered for A2P 10DLC. Carriers can block it.
- Leaving out the business name, so the customer doesn't know who is texting.
- Promising a call-back time the team can't keep.
Questions people ask.Short answers.
Is it legal to text someone who called my business?
We found no FCC statement that a missed call counts as consent to be texted. Texts count as calls under the TCPA, and autodialed texts need consent. Keep the first reply informational, include STOP, and continue only if the customer replies. This isn't legal advice.
Which replies count as opting out?
FCC rules treat replies such as stop, quit, end, revoke, opt out, cancel or unsubscribe as revoking consent, and require you to honour them within 10 business days.
Do I need to register my number?
If you text from a local 10-digit number through software, US carriers require A2P 10DLC registration through your provider. Twilio, for example, blocks unregistered traffic.
What changes on November 25, 2026?
An FCC rule published on October 26, 2026 lets a business name STOP-style replies as its only opt-out method, as long as every text says so. The 10-business-day limit stays.
