How to get your business in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

How to get your business on Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, from Google's own docs. What your profile, reviews and schema do, and the order to fix things.

Updated 16 min read

The short answer

You can't sign up for Google AI Overviews or pay to be in them. Google builds them from pages it already indexes, so the way in is the usual Search groundwork: a crawlable, indexed site, pages that answer customers' questions and an up-to-date Business Profile. Reviews and listings on sites like Yelp matter too, because Overviews often cite them.

  • There's no sign-up and no fee. Any page Google indexes and can show with a snippet is eligible.
  • In Whitespark's study, Overviews showed on 15% of plain local searches but over 90% of research questions.
  • Google says to keep your Business Profile up to date, and that no special schema is needed.
  • Overviews often cite third-party sites, so reviews and listings off your site count too.
  • Search Console counts AI Overview clicks inside the Web totals, so pair it with a monthly manual check.

A patient in Phoenix is weighing up dental implants. Before she calls anyone, she types “average cost of dental implants in Phoenix” into Google. The first thing she sees is often an AI Overview, a short summary with a few links underneath. The practices behind those links have her attention before she ever opens Maps.

So how do you get your business on a Google AI Overview? Not with a form or a fee. Google builds Overviews, and its newer AI Mode, from pages it already indexes, and it documents what helps. This guide covers what Google says, how Overviews differ from the map, and the order to fix things. It’s for owners of US local service businesses in fifteen trades: home services, health practices and auto repair.

Key takeaways

  • There's no sign-up, fee or setting for AI Overviews. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements.
  • AI Overviews and the local pack answer different questions. In Whitespark's study the map led plain local searches, while Overviews showed on over 90% of research questions.
  • Google lists an up-to-date Business Profile among the practices that apply to its AI features, and says no special schema is needed.
  • Overviews often cite third-party sites such as Yelp, Thumbtack and Reddit, so your details and reviews off your own site matter.
  • Search Console counts AI Overview and AI Mode clicks inside the Web totals. Pair it with a monthly check of the questions customers ask.

What are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages they draw on. AI Mode is a separate, chat-like way to search Google that gives one AI answer and invites follow-up questions. Both run inside Google Search and use its index, so the same groundwork serves both.

  • AI Overview. AI Overviews appear when Google’s systems decide generative AI “can be especially helpful”, says Google’s help page. Searchers can’t switch them off, though the Web filter hides them.
  • AI Mode. AI Mode divides a question into subtopics and searches each one at the same time, per Google’s AI Mode help page. When it isn’t confident in an AI answer, it may show web links instead.
  • Query fan-out. Google’s name for that splitting. It says both features may run multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.
  • Preview controls. The nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex settings that limit how pages show in Search, AI features included.

Our Google AI Overviews and AI Mode guide lists the crawlers Google documents, and the separate Gemini app has its own guide.

Why do AI Overviews matter for local businesses now?

They matter because the research a customer does before calling now happens inside Google’s AI answers, and that’s where the shortlist forms. Google reports heavy use of both, and one study found Overviews on almost every local cost and how-to question.

1 billion+

Google says AI Mode passed one billion monthly users a year after launch, with queries more than doubling every quarter.

10%+

Google reported that in markets like the US and India, AI Overviews drove an over 10% increase in Google usage for the types of queries that show them.

Google also says people in its AI experiences are asking longer and more specific questions, plus follow-ups, and that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with visitors more likely to stay longer. Google gives no number, so treat it as Google’s claim, not a forecast.

The plain lesson: the map still wins “near me”, and the Overview wins the research before it.

Whitespark figures from 540 searches in Houston, Phoenix and Denver on where AI Overviews and the local pack appear.

Can you sign up or pay to get into AI Overviews?

No. There’s no sign-up, form, fee or setting. Google says that to be a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Getting your business on a Google AI Overview for free is the only way it happens.

Google adds that Overviews only appear when its systems decide they add something to classic Search, so they often don’t show at all. For the map, its local ranking help says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

The only switches work the other way. Preview controls such as nosnippet and noindex limit how your content shows in Google’s AI experiences. They can keep you out. Nothing lets you opt in.

How are AI Overviews different from the local pack and Maps?

They answer different questions and pick businesses differently. The local pack ranks Google Business Profiles for “who’s near me” searches. AI Overviews summarize pages from across the web for research questions and link to sources. AI Mode does the same in a longer answer that takes follow-ups.

Google’s wording for the map is that “local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity”. The page still files the last one under a Prominence heading, and says it draws on things like links to your business and how many reviews you have.

Local pack and Maps AI Overview AI Mode
What it is A map and short list of nearby businesses A summary above the results, with links A chat-like answer with follow-ups
What it draws on Business Profiles, on relevance, distance and popularity Pages in Google’s index, through related searches Pages in Google’s index, through query fan-out

How do you get your business on a Google AI Overview?

Work through Google’s documented basics in order: make your pages indexable, complete your profile, match your listings, build honest reviews, then publish pages that answer what customers research. The early steps decide whether the later ones count.

  1. Check Google can index your pages. Verify your site in Search Console. Google says Googlebot mustn’t be blocked, and pages must return an HTTP 200 status with indexable content. Our AI crawler checker tests your robots.txt.
  2. Remove snippet blocks from service pages. A noindex or nosnippet tag left over from a rebuild quietly removes a page from AI features.
  3. Complete your Google Business Profile. Hours, categories, services, service area and photos. Google lists up-to-date Business Profile information among the practices for AI features. See the HVAC Google Business Profile playbook.
  4. Match your details on other listings. BrightLocal found Yelp was the second most-used source for local results in AI Overviews. Claim and complete your Yelp page, but don’t ask for Yelp reviews, because Yelp asks businesses not to.
  5. Ask every customer for a Google review. Google’s Maps policy bans selectively soliciting positive reviews and requesting specific content. Our review request templates follow those rules.
  6. Write answer-first pages for research questions. One page per main service, opening with a direct answer to the cost, timing or should-I question. Google tells owners to focus on unique, non-commodity content, and your real price range and process are exactly that.
  7. Add LocalBusiness schema that matches the page. Use the most specific type for your trade and the details your page shows. Our LocalBusiness schema generator writes the code.
  8. Add real photos and video. Google advises supporting text with high-quality images and videos. Real job photos count.
  9. Check monthly. Search your research questions and note who’s named. The self-audit guide has a scoring method.

What do Business Profile, reviews and schema markup actually do?

Each does a specific job, and none of them is a switch for AI Overviews. Your Business Profile and reviews feed the map and give Google consistent facts. Schema markup helps Google read your pages. What Google doesn’t say about each matters as much as what it does.

What Google says it does What it doesn’t do
Business Profile Listed among practices for AI features, and it powers the map It isn’t a sign-up for Overviews, and Google doesn’t say how much they draw on it
Reviews More reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking Google doesn’t document review count as an AI Overview factor
Schema markup Machine-readable details that Google’s systems consider Google says no special schema is needed for AI features

Your Google Business Profile

Your profile holds the business facts you control directly on Google, so wrong hours there can show up wherever Google uses them. Keep hours, holiday hours and services current, or let our Google Business Profile service do it.

Reviews on Google and beyond

Reviews help in two places. On Google, more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Off Google, Overviews cite review sites, so a strong Google rating beside a thin Yelp page leaves a gap. Our post on whether Google reviews affect ChatGPT covers which sites to build next, and how to get more Google reviews covers the asking.

Schema markup for local business

Schema markup is code that states your details in a machine-readable way. Google’s local business structured data guide requires only a name and an address, recommends properties such as telephone, opening hours, price range and URL, and asks for the most specific LocalBusiness subtype you can use.

Google’s rule for AI features is simple: your structured data must match the visible text on the page. Test it with Google’s Rich Results Test after every change.

Can Google’s AI call your business?

Yes, in some cases. Google says it can call businesses on a customer’s behalf to check prices and availability, and AI Mode’s “Check for me” option can call when a business has limited information online. If your phone rings out, you’re not in that customer’s set of quotes.

Google’s pricing help page names services such as auto repair, hair salons and pet groomers. Google calls several nearby providers and emails the searcher the quotes. At I/O 2026, Google said customers could ask it to call businesses in select categories such as home repair, rolling out to everyone in the US that summer.

Google’s automated calls help page says the calls go to the number on your Business Profile and are monitored and recorded, and details you share may be added to your profile. Verified owners can turn them off under Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings.

Our Missed calls and AI receptionist service answers calls, handles common questions and books jobs, and texts back any call it still misses. Compare options in AI receptionist vs answering service.

How do you see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Google counts it inside the normal Performance report. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode sit in the Web search type, mixed with your other web results, and aren’t a search type of their own. So read Search Console alongside a monthly manual check.

Google’s impressions and position help page explains the counting.

  • AI Overviews. An Overview takes a single position in the results, and every link inside it gets that position. Clicking an external link in it counts as a click.
  • AI Mode. External link clicks count the same way. A follow-up question is treated as a new query, with its own impressions and positions.
  • Search Labs. Data from Google’s Search Labs experiments isn’t included.

Google also suggests tracking conversions in tools such as Google Analytics. For a local business, that means calls, form fills and direction requests.

What about AI Overview rank tracking tools?

AI Overview rank tracking tools typically sample answers for a list of searches and report whether you’re named or linked. Answers vary by run, place and device, so check any tool’s city settings and confirm a few results by hand.

How do you check whether AI Overviews name you?

Search the research questions customers ask before they call, with your city, and record three things: whether an Overview appears, which businesses it names and which sites it links. Repeat monthly with the same questions so the results compare.

Example question, HVAC in Plano What usually shows
AC repair Plano Map pack first
How much does a new AC unit cost in Plano? AI Overview likely
Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old AC in Plano? AI Overview likely
Best HVAC company in Plano for heat pumps Either, so check both

That pattern follows Whitespark’s findings, and yours may differ by trade and city. Read what the Overview says about you too, because Google’s help page warns that AI Overviews can and will make mistakes. Wrong hours or a service you don’t offer is a fix for your profile and pages.

How does this work for each trade?

The groundwork is shared, but the research questions differ by trade, and so do the sites Overviews cite. Home service customers research price, repair or replace, and timing. Each section names the questions to test and the page that answers them.

For HVAC companies

HVAC questions follow the weather: “how much does a new AC unit cost” when it’s hot, “why is my furnace making noise” when it’s cold. Both are the cost and how-to questions Overviews answer. Give each system its own page that opens with your real price range, and update seasonal pages before the season. Our guide to HVAC companies in ChatGPT covers the AC repair questions.

For plumbing companies

Plumbing splits in two. Emergency searches like “burst pipe” go to the map, where distance and hours matter most. Research questions like the cost of a new water heater get an Overview, and in Whitespark’s Houston set 60% of its citations went to third-party sites such as Yelp, Thumbtack and Reddit. Claim those listings and publish your water heater range. Read how to show up for emergency plumber near me searches for the map side.

For roofing companies

Roofing questions spike after storms, and many are research: how long a replacement takes, what an inspection involves, how to spot hail damage. Answer them with photos from real local jobs, and show your license number where your state issues one. Home repair is one of the categories Google named for AI calling, so storm-week calls need answering. See how roofers get found after a storm.

How do I get my dental practice, med spa or auto shop into Google’s AI Overview?

Health practices and auto shops use the same groundwork with one difference each. Practices face stricter rules on what they say and how they reply to reviews. Auto shops are among the first services Google names for its AI price checks, so the phone matters as much as the page.

For dental practices

Whitespark’s hybrid example was a dental one: “average cost of dental implants in Phoenix”. A page on what drives implant cost and which insurance you take gives an Overview something to cite. Ask every patient for a review, and keep replies general without confirming the reviewer is a patient. Our guide to how dental practices get named in ChatGPT and AI Overviews goes further. Privacy rules vary by state; check with your attorney.

For med spas

Med spa research is about treatments: what a procedure involves, how long results last, who performs it. Answer those on treatment pages, but only with claims you can support, because advertising rules apply before any AI tactic does. Our guide to med spa advertising rules explains the limits. Rules vary by state; check with your attorney.

More for med spas: Med spa marketing and AI visibility

For auto repair shops

Google’s pricing help page names auto repair among the services where its AI can call nearby shops for quotes, so an unanswered phone can cost you a quote request. Publish price ranges for common jobs such as brakes or a check-engine diagnosis, list the makes you service, and keep hours exact.

Example: tracking one HVAC company’s AI Overview visibility

Here’s how the maths works, with round figures chosen to keep the arithmetic easy.

Example: an HVAC company in Plano tracks 12 research questions. In month one, an Overview appears on 9 of them, and the company is named or linked in 1 of those 9, about 11%.

Over two months it works through the fix order. It removes a leftover noindex tag from its heat pump page, completes its Business Profile, claims its Yelp page and publishes three answer-first cost pages.

Example: in month three, an Overview appears on 10 of the 12, and the company is named or linked in 4 of those 10, or 40%. That’s 3 more answers naming it.

In Search Console, the three new pages go from 15 Web clicks a month to 42, an Example gain of 27. The owner can’t split AI Overview clicks from the rest, so the call log is the real test. If 1 in 10 of those 27 extra visits calls, that’s about 3 more calls a month. One month can be noise. Three months moving the same way is a trend.

What are the most common AI Overview mistakes?

The most common mistake is waiting for a sign-up that doesn’t exist. The rest come from treating Overviews as a trick instead of a reader of your pages and listings. Each one either hides you or wastes money.

  • Paying for “AI Overview placement”. Google describes no paid route. Pay for work you can see and measure.
  • Leaving a noindex or nosnippet tag on. A tag from a rebuild removes pages from AI features without warning.
  • Adding schema that doesn’t match the page. Hours or phone numbers that exist only in code break Google’s rule.
  • Asking only happy customers. Google’s Maps policy forbids it. Ask every customer the same way, and never tell them what to write.
  • Asking for Yelp reviews. Yelp asks businesses not to. Claim and complete the page instead.
  • Judging by one search. Answers change by run, place and device. Track the same questions monthly.
  • Expecting an Overview to replace the map. For plain local searches the map still led in Whitespark’s study.
  • Letting the phone ring out. Google’s AI may call to check your prices. Our post on why missed calls are the cheapest leads you’re losing has the maths.

What should you check every month?

A short monthly routine catches most problems before they cost you. It takes under an hour once the question list is set. Copy this checklist and run it on the same day each month.

Monthly AI Overview check for a local business

  • Search 10 to 12 research questions with your city and record whether an Overview appears, who’s named and which sites are linked
  • Read what each Overview says about you and fix anything wrong
  • Confirm your main service pages are indexed, with no noindex or nosnippet tags
  • Check Business Profile hours, holiday hours, services and categories
  • Count new Google reviews, and confirm every customer was asked the same way
  • Check that Yelp and directory listings match your name, address, phone and hours
  • Test your LocalBusiness schema in the Rich Results Test after any site change
  • Compare Search Console Web clicks and your call log with last month

How does Damex work on AI Overviews?

We work on what Google reads and measure the result monthly, without promising placement. A senior marketer owns your account, mid-level specialists do the hands-on work, and every piece is checked before it goes out under your name.

  • Audit. We ask five AI engines, Google AI Overviews among them, the questions your customers ask, and record who gets named.
  • Profile. From Essentials up, we keep your Google Business Profile complete and post weekly.
  • Listings. We fix your name, address and phone across the directories AI engines and maps read for your trade, including Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
  • Reviews. On Growth and Authority, we ask customers after each job, with their consent, and reply to every review.
  • Pages. We write answer-first service and FAQ pages, with structured data that matches the page.
  • Calls. The AI receptionist add-on answers calls, handles common questions, books jobs and texts back any call it still misses.
  • Measure. We count the answers that name or cite you against your starting point.

AI Visibility tracks 10 to 50 buyer questions across five engines each month, depending on your package, and Local SEO covers listings and pages. For what this work costs line by line, read our local marketing costs guide, and see every package on the pricing page. More guides are in the AI visibility hub.

How we researched this

We read each claim at its source on October 31 and November 1, 2026: Google’s Search Central documentation and blog, Google Search Help, Search Console Help, Business Profile Help, the Google Maps contribution policy and Google’s product announcements. Study figures come from Whitespark’s May 2025 study of 540 local searches and BrightLocal’s research on AI citation sources. Damex has no affiliation with either.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to be included in an AI Overview?

No. Google describes no paid or sign-up route. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements. It also says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking.

How do I get my business on Google AI Overview for free?

The free route is the only route. Make sure Google can index your pages, keep your Business Profile complete, ask every customer for a review, and publish pages that answer the cost and how-to questions customers search before they call.

How do I get my business recommended by Google AI Overviews?

Nobody can guarantee it. Overviews name businesses that their sources mention, so the work is giving Google consistent details, real reviews and pages that answer the question directly. Then check monthly whether you're named.

Do AI Overviews replace the map pack?

Not for plain local searches. In Whitespark's study, the local pack appeared on 93% of local-intent searches, while Overviews appeared on 15%. Overviews led on research questions instead.

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. Both are part of Google Search, but AI Mode is a separate chat-like mode that splits a question into subtopics and invites follow-ups. Google says the two may use different models, so their answers and links vary.

What is Google schema markup?

Schema markup, or structured data, is code that describes your page in a machine-readable way, such as your business name, address, phone and hours. Google says its systems consider it, and that it must match what's visible on the page.

Will LocalBusiness schema get me into AI Overviews?

No markup guarantees inclusion. Google says there's no special schema.org structured data needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Accurate LocalBusiness markup still helps Google read your details.

Do reviews matter for AI Overviews?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and studies show Overviews often cite review sites such as Yelp. Ask every customer for a Google review, and claim and complete your Yelp page without asking for Yelp reviews.

Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Partly. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report under the Web search type, mixed in with other web results. All links in one AI Overview share a single position.

What is the best AI Overviews rank tracker?

We don't recommend a specific tool. Any AI Overview rank tracking tool can only sample answers that vary by run and location, so check its question list and city settings, and confirm a few results by hand.

How do I get my dental practice into Google's AI Overview?

Publish plain answers to the questions patients research, such as what affects the cost of implants and which insurance you take, keep your profile current and ask every patient for a review. Keep review replies general. Rules vary by state; check with your attorney.

Can Google's AI call my business?

Yes. Google says it can call businesses on a customer's behalf to check prices and availability. Owners of verified profiles can manage these calls in the Business Profile's advanced settings.
