Google AI Mode.In plain English.

Definition

Updated

Google AI Mode is a way of searching Google that replies with an AI-written answer, with links to the web, and invites follow-up questions.

Google announced it in March 2025 as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs, and in May 2025 began rolling it out to everyone in the US with no Labs sign-up.

Google says AI Mode divides a question into subtopics and searches for each one at the same time, a technique it calls query fan-out, and that when it isn't confident enough in an AI response it shows a set of web links instead.

AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show vary.

For a local business, the basics that help in normal search help here too. Keep your Business Profile accurate and your listings consistent, and publish pages that answer common questions directly.

Example: someone asks AI Mode which roofers near them handle storm damage and insurance claims. The answer is built from several searches at once and links to the pages it used.
