Query fan-out.In plain English.

Definition

Updated

Query fan-out is when an AI search system splits one question into several related searches and combines what it finds into a single answer.

Google says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use it, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one answer.

Google's own example is a question about fixing a lawn full of weeds, which can fan out to searches such as 'best herbicides for lawns' and 'remove weeds without chemicals'. A question like 'who should fix my AC tonight' can fan out the same way, into emergency service, opening hours, reviews and price.

Don't build a page for every fan-out query. Google says creating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers this way violates its scaled content abuse spam policy, and that its systems understand synonyms, so you don't need to chase every variation.

One useful page that answers the follow-up questions customers really ask does more than many thin ones.

A plumber's page that covers emergency hours, call-out fees and the neighborhoods served answers three fan-out searches at once.
