The short answer
Updated
Plumbers should choose Plumber as their primary category on Google Business Profile, then add secondary categories only for work they really do, such as Drainage service or Septic system service. Google's own examples use plumbers: hide a home address, set service areas by town, and list services like 'Repair toilet'. Keep emergency claims true and your hours exact.
Your categories.Primary first.
The primary category tells Google what you mainly are. Secondary ones add the other work you do.

It's the category customers' searches match first, and Google's own guidelines use plumbers as the example service-area business.
Drainage service
Use it when you clear drains and blockages as a regular service.

Use it when you pump, repair or install septic systems.
Sewage disposal service
Use it when you do sewer line work.

Attributes.Small ticks, real answers.
- Owner identity
- Google offers attributes such as Veteran-owned, Women-owned and Black-owned. Add only those that are true; they help customers who look for them.
- Small business
- Google defines a small business as one making less than $10 million a year, and franchises can't use it.
8 photos first.Real jobs, real people.
- 01A plumber at work under a sink
- 02A water heater you installed, with pipework neat
- 03A camera inspection screen showing a sewer line
- 04Your branded van at a job, with no house number in view

A year of posts. One a week, by season.
Example posts to adapt. Write them from your own jobs and photos.
- January
- Frozen pipesExample: Pipes froze overnight? Open the tap, warm the pipe gently, never use a flame. If it's split, shut off the main and call us.
- February
- Water heatersExample: Rust-coloured hot water or a rumbling tank? What those signs mean and when a flush helps.
- March
- Sump pumpsExample: Spring rain is coming. Pour a bucket into your sump pit and check the pump switches on.
- April
- Outdoor tapsExample: Turning the outside taps back on? Check for drips inside the wall first. Here's how.
- May
- Leak checksExample: Your water meter can find a hidden leak. Turn off every tap, then watch the dial for ten minutes.
- June
- Real jobExample: A slab leak found and fixed in [neighbourhood] this week, without tearing up the whole floor.
- July
- Garbage disposalsExample: What not to put down the disposal at summer cookouts, from the plumbers who unclog them.
- August
- Water pressureExample: Low pressure in one tap or the whole house? The difference tells you where the problem is.
- September
- Sewer linesExample: Slow drains in more than one room can point to the main line. How a camera inspection finds the cause.
- October
- WinterisingExample: Before the first freeze: disconnect hoses, insulate exposed pipes, and know where your main shut-off is.
- November
- Holiday kitchensExample: Fats and grease set hard in pipes. Bin them, don't pour them, especially on the big cooking days.
- December
- Emergency readinessExample: Find and label your main shut-off valve today. In a burst, the first two minutes matter.
What gets profiles suspended.Avoid these.
- Adding keywords, towns or taglines to your business name. Google says it can lead to suspension.Google's guideline
- Using a P.O. box or a virtual office you don't work from as your address.Google's guideline
- Showing your home address. Google's own example says a plumber working from home should clear it.Google's guideline
- Listing a staffed-looking office you don't actually staff during business hours.Google's guideline
- Creating a new profile for the same business, including after a suspension. Appeal instead; Google allows one appeal.Google's guideline
Questions people ask.Short answers.
Should a plumber show their address on Google?
Not if customers don't visit it. Google's guidelines use a plumber working from home as the example of a business that should clear its address and set service areas.
How many service areas can I add?
Up to 20, based on cities, postal codes or other areas. Google doesn't allow a radius around your address.
Can I say we're open 24/7?
Only if someone really answers around the clock. Hours must match what customers experience, and the same goes for your website and other listings.
