The short answer
Updated
Electricians should choose Electrician as their primary category on Google Business Profile, then add secondary categories only for work they really do, such as Lighting contractor or Electric vehicle charging station contractor. Avoid supply-store categories unless you sell to the public. Hide a home address, set service areas by town, list services like panel upgrades in customers' words, and post real jobs weekly.
Your categories.Primary first.
The primary category tells Google what you mainly are. Secondary ones add the other work you do.
Primary
Electrician
It's the category that matches how customers search, and it's in both public copies of Google's list.
Electrical installation service
Use it when new circuits, wiring and installs are a large part of your work.
Lighting contractor
Use it when you design or install lighting systems, indoors or out.
Electric vehicle charging station contractor
Use it when you install EV chargers.
Landscape lighting designer
Use it when you design and install outdoor lighting.
Solar energy system service
Use it when you install or service solar systems.
Skip it if you only wire up panels another company installs.
Electrical supply store
Use it when you run a counter that sells electrical parts to the public.
Skip it if you only buy parts for your own jobs. Google says categories should say what the business is.
Services to add.The way customers say them.

Attributes.Small ticks, real answers.
- Owner identity
- Google offers attributes such as Veteran-owned, Women-owned and Black-owned. Add only those that are true; they help customers who look for them.
- Small business
- Google defines a small business as one making less than $10 million a year, and franchises can't use it.
8 photos first.Real jobs, real people.

What gets profiles suspended.Avoid these.
- Adding keywords, towns or taglines to your business name. Google says it can lead to suspension.Google's guideline
- Using a P.O. box or a virtual office you don't work from as your address.Google's guideline
- Showing your home address instead of hiding it and setting service areas.Google's guideline
- A service area that stretches beyond about two hours' drive from your base.Google's guideline
- Creating a new profile for the same business, including after a suspension. Appeal instead; Google allows one appeal.Google's guideline
Questions people ask.Short answers.
What's the best primary category for an electrician?
Electrician fits most electrical contractors. Add Lighting contractor or Electric vehicle charging station contractor only if that work is a real part of the business.
Should I use Electrical supply store?
Only if you sell parts to the public at a counter. Google asks for categories that describe what the business is.
Can I add 'emergency' to my business name?
No. Google doesn't allow service words in the name unless they're part of your real-world name, and it can lead to suspension.
