A Markdown twin is a plain-text Markdown version of a web page, published at a parallel address so AI tools can read the content without the page's layout and scripts.
The llms.txt proposal suggests giving pages a clean Markdown version at the same address with .md added, and linking to it from the page with rel="alternate" type="text/markdown".
Some sites also serve the Markdown version when a client asks for it. That uses ordinary HTTP content negotiation: the client's Accept header names the formats it prefers, and text/markdown is a registered media type. Cloudflare offers this as a beta feature called Markdown for Agents, which converts pages on the fly on its paid plans.
Google says you don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no major AI engine has said it ranks pages higher for having a Markdown version.
It is cheap to publish and removes clutter for tools that read it.
Damex serves a Markdown twin for every guide, for example /sources/yelp.md next to /sources/yelp/, and sends it to any client that asks for text/markdown.
