llms.txt.In plain English.

Definition

Updated

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file, usually at the root of a website, that summarizes the site and links its key pages for AI tools.

The proposal was published by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 and revised as version 2 in August 2026. The only required part is an H1 with the site's name. A short summary, details and lists of links follow, and an 'Optional' section holds links an AI tool can skip. The file can also sit at any path in a site, covering the pages under it.

Google is clear that it doesn't use it. Its 2026 guide to AI search says you can ignore creating unnecessary AI text files such as llms.txt, which neither harm nor help visibility in Google Search because Google ignores them.

No other major AI engine has said it relies on llms.txt either. It is cheap to publish and can help developer tools that do read it, which is why some sites keep one.

Damex publishes one at damex.digital/llms.txt, with the full site at /llms-full.txt and one file per section under /llms/.
