AI share of voice compares how often your business is named in AI answers against how often your competitors are named for the same questions.
It turns your own score into a comparison. If three businesses are named for most questions in your area, share of voice shows which one leads.
AI answers aren't fixed. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary, and that AI Overviews often don't appear at all. OpenAI says there is an inherent element of randomness in how ChatGPT responds, so the same question may get different answers.
That's why share of voice needs many questions, asked more than once and phrased the way customers phrase them. Google's own AI Mode help suggests asking several versions of a question.
The idea mirrors impression share in Google Ads, which divides the impressions your ads got by the impressions they were eligible for. AI share of voice divides the times you are named by the times any business is named, across the same questions.
Each month Damex records which businesses each engine names for every tracked question, which is the data share of voice is built from.
Example: across 25 questions on 5 engines, the answers name local roofers 200 times in total and your company 30 of those times, a share of voice of 15%.
