# Seasonal customer email templates: 9 examples

> A good seasonal email reminds a past customer about a job that's due, like a furnace check or a spring cleanup. Under US law it's a commercial email, so the subject must be accurate, it must say it's an ad, and it must include your postal address and an opt-out you honour within 10 business days. Send it only to customers who expect to hear from you.

The FTC says prior consent only removes the need to label the email as an ad. The postal address and opt-out are always required.

## Rules that apply

- [FTC: CAN-SPAM Act, a compliance guide for business](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business)
- [Google: Email sender guidelines (Gmail)](https://support.google.com/a/answer/81126)
- [Yahoo: Sender best practices](https://senders.yahooinc.com/best-practices/)

## Mistakes to avoid

- A subject line that promises something the email doesn't contain.
- No physical postal address in the footer.
- An unsubscribe link that stops working, or opt-outs that take longer than 10 business days.
- Sending from a domain without SPF and DKIM set up, which Gmail and Yahoo require.

## FAQs

### Do I need consent to email past customers?

The FTC says CAN-SPAM has no opt-in requirement. Consent only removes the need to label the email as an ad, and emailing people who expect to hear from you keeps spam complaints down.

### What's the penalty for getting it wrong?

The FTC says each email that breaks CAN-SPAM can bring a penalty of up to $53,088.

### What do Gmail and Yahoo require?

SPF or DKIM authentication, DMARC for bulk senders, one-click unsubscribe on marketing email, and a spam rate below 0.3%. Gmail recommends staying below 0.1%.
