# State licensing boards: what customers and AI can check

> State licensing boards license contractors and health professionals and publish free public lookups. The FTC tells homeowners to confirm a contractor's licence with the state before hiring, and California's contractor board warns that a licence number alone doesn't prove it's valid. We found no statement that AI engines read these lookups, but a published licence number makes your claims checkable.

Example lookup: https://www.cslb.ca.gov/onlineservices/checklicenseII/checklicense.aspx. Cost: Free to look up. Licence fees vary by state and trade.

## How to claim and fix it

1. **Find your board.** Look up the board for your state and trade, for example CSLB in California, TDLR in Texas or DBPR in Florida.
2. **Check your own record.** Search your licence and confirm the business name, status and expiry date are current.
3. **Publish the number.** Show your licence number on your service pages and in listings that have a licence field, so customers can check it.
4. **Keep the name matched.** Make sure the name on your licence matches the name on your Google profile and website.

## Keep these fields identical to your Google profile

- Business name as licensed
- Licence number
- Licence status and expiry
- Address of record

## How Damex handles it

We add your licence number to your service pages and LocalBusiness markup, and check that the name on your licence matches your Google profile. Renewals stay with you.

## FAQs

### Do I need a licence for every job?

It depends on your state, your trade and the size of the job. Your state board publishes the rules.

### Can patients check a dentist's licence?

Yes. State dental boards publish lookups. California's Dental Board, for example, sends people to the state's licence search.

### Why put my licence number online?

Customers are told to check it. The FTC advises confirming a contractor's licence with the state, and a visible number makes that easy.
