# Google Business Profile for electrical contractors: categories, services and posts

> Electricians should choose Electrician as their primary category on Google Business Profile, then add secondary categories only for work they really do, such as Lighting contractor or Electric vehicle charging station contractor. Avoid supply-store categories unless you sell to the public. Hide a home address, set service areas by town, list services like panel upgrades in customers' words, and post real jobs weekly.

Published Nov 1, 2026, updated Nov 1, 2026. By Shakhawat Ullah Badhon, Founder, Damex Digital.

Category names checked against public copies of Google's list on Nov 1, 2026. Google doesn't publish the list openly, so confirm each one in your profile's category picker.

## Primary category

**Electrician.** It's the category that matches how customers search, and it's in both public copies of Google's list.

## Secondary categories

| Category | Use it when | Avoid it when |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical installation service | New circuits, wiring and installs are a large part of your work. | |
| Lighting contractor | You design or install lighting systems, indoors or out. | |
| Electric vehicle charging station contractor | You install EV chargers. | |
| Landscape lighting designer | You design and install outdoor lighting. | |
| Solar energy system service | You install or service solar systems. | you only wire up panels another company installs. |
| Electrical supply store | You run a counter that sells electrical parts to the public. | you only buy parts for your own jobs. Google says categories should say what the business is. |

## Services to add

- **Repairs:** Breaker replacement, Outlet repair, Troubleshoot power loss, Repair wiring
- **Upgrades:** Panel upgrade, EV charger installation, Whole-house rewiring, Generator hookup
- **Lighting:** Light fixture installation, Ceiling fan installation, Landscape lighting

## Attributes

- **Owner identity:** Google offers attributes such as Veteran-owned, Women-owned and Black-owned. Add only those that are true; they help customers who look for them.
- **Small business:** Google defines a small business as one making less than $10 million a year, and franchises can't use it.

## Photos to upload first

1. An electrician at work on a panel, cover on the finished job
2. An EV charger you installed, neatly mounted
3. Your branded van at a job, with no house number in view
4. The team in uniform
5. Before and after of a panel upgrade
6. Outdoor lighting you installed, at dusk
7. A ceiling fan or fixture install
8. Your shop or office exterior with signage, if customers can visit

## A year of posts (examples)

| Month | Topic | Example post |
|---|---|---|
| January | Storm season prep | Power cuts happen. What to do when half the house goes dark, and when to call an electrician. |
| February | Old wiring | Warm switches, flickering lights or a burning smell are signs to call a qualified electrician. Here's why. |
| March | Spring projects | Planning a kitchen or basement project? Bring the electrician in early so permits don't slow you down. |
| April | EV chargers | Thinking about a home EV charger? What we check first: your panel, the run to the garage and the permit. |
| May | Outdoor power | Outdoor outlets should be protected. A quick look at what we install for patios and pools. |
| June | Real job | This week in [neighbourhood]: a 1960s panel replaced and the house ready for an EV charger. |
| July | Cooling load | AC, fans and fridges all at once can trip breakers. What it means and what fixes it. |
| August | Lighting | Landscape lighting we finished in [town]. Low-voltage, on a timer, no trip hazards. |
| September | Back to school | Home offices and dorm-style bedrooms need more outlets. Why extension cords aren't the answer. |
| October | Generators | Before winter: how a generator hookup works and why it needs a proper transfer switch. |
| November | Holiday lights | Outdoor lights on the same circuit as the fridge? Simple ways to avoid tripped breakers this season. |
| December | Safety check | End-of-year reminder from our team: test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. |

## What gets profiles suspended

- Adding keywords, towns or taglines to your business name. Google says it can lead to suspension. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177))
- Using a P.O. box or a virtual office you don't work from as your address. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13762416))
- Showing your home address instead of hiding it and setting service areas. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177))
- A service area that stretches beyond about two hours' drive from your base. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177))
- Creating a new profile for the same business, including after a suspension. Appeal instead; Google allows one appeal. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4569145))

## FAQs

### What's the best primary category for an electrician?

Electrician fits most electrical contractors. Add Lighting contractor or Electric vehicle charging station contractor only if that work is a real part of the business.

### Should I use Electrical supply store?

Only if you sell parts to the public at a counter. Google asks for categories that describe what the business is.

### Can I add 'emergency' to my business name?

No. Google doesn't allow service words in the name unless they're part of your real-world name, and it can lead to suspension.
