# Google Business Profile for auto repair shops: categories, services and posts

> Auto repair shops should choose Auto repair shop as their primary category on Google Business Profile, then add secondaries for real specialties, such as Brake shop or Transmission shop. Avoid parts-store categories, which describe selling. Google calls shops with roadside service hybrid service-area businesses. Show your hours, diagnostic fee and state registration where required, and post real jobs weekly.

Category names checked against public copies of Google's list on Nov 1, 2026. Google doesn't publish the list openly, so confirm each one in your profile's category picker.

## What gets profiles suspended

- Adding keywords, towns or taglines to your business name. Google says it can lead to suspension. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177))
- Using a P.O. box or a virtual office you don't work from as your address. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13762416))
- Hiding the shop address customers visit because you also do roadside work. Google treats shops with a garage and roadside service as hybrid service-area businesses. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177))
- Claiming certifications, such as ASE, that don't apply to the whole team. Google prohibits misrepresentation. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7400114))
- Creating a new profile for the same business, including after a suspension. Appeal instead; Google allows one appeal. ([Google's guideline](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4569145))

## FAQs

### Auto repair shop or Mechanic as primary?

Auto repair shop suits most shops. Mechanic is a valid secondary if you also do mobile repairs.

### Should I add Auto body shop?

Only if you do collision repair. It's a different trade from mechanical repair.

### Do I hide my address?

No, customers come to the shop. Google says shops that also offer roadside service are hybrid service-area businesses and can add service areas.
