# How to get your business on Perplexity AI

> You can't submit or list a local service business on Perplexity AI. It searches the web for each question and cites the pages it used. You get on Perplexity by being on those pages, which means a website PerplexityBot is allowed to crawl, accurate Yelp and directory profiles, specific reviews and pages that answer customer questions directly.

## The short version

- There is no Perplexity sign-up or listing for plumbers, roofers, dentists or med spas.
- Perplexity searches the web for each question and links every answer to numbered sources.
- Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and a firewall can still block it.
- The Merchant Program is for large retailers' products, not service businesses.
- The citations under each answer show you exactly which sites to fix or join.

## Key facts

| | |
|---|---|
| Who this is for | US local service businesses in fifteen trades: home services, health practices and auto repair |
| What to do first | Check your robots.txt and firewall let PerplexityBot in |
| Cost to be included | Nothing. There is no listing fee or form for local businesses |

A homeowner in Tampa spots a water stain on the bedroom ceiling after a storm. Instead of searching, they ask Perplexity which roofers nearby handle leak repairs and have good reviews. It writes a short answer, names a few companies and puts small numbered links next to each claim. If your company isn't in those links, it isn't in the answer.

So the owner looks for a way to get my business on Perplexity AI, and finds there's no sign-up page. This guide explains why, then covers what works: how Perplexity searches and cites, the crawler settings that matter, where it finds local information, how to test, and what to fix first. It's written for owners of US local service businesses in fifteen trades: home services, health practices and auto repair.

**Key takeaways**

- Perplexity has no listing, claim or submission form for local service businesses. It finds you by searching the web.
- Every Perplexity answer carries numbered citations, so you can see exactly which pages it used and which to fix.
- Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt. A firewall rule or Cloudflare setting can still block it.
- In BrightLocal's 2025 test, Perplexity used Yelp in all 10 industries checked. Claim and complete your Yelp page.
- The Merchant Program is for large retailers' product data. It does nothing for a plumber or a dental practice.

## Can you list your business on Perplexity for free?

No. There is no form, directory or free listing where a local service business can add itself to Perplexity, and no paid one either. When someone asks a question, Perplexity searches the web, gathers sources and writes a summary, according to its own help center. You get in by being on the pages it finds.

Unlike Google or Bing, Perplexity has no business directory of its own. It reads other people's directories, your website and the articles that mention you. So the free route and the only route are the same: make the pages Perplexity reads accurate and easy to cite.

> **Good to know:** If someone offers to "register" you with Perplexity or guarantee a spot in its answers, ask what exactly they submit and where. Perplexity documents no such form, and no one controls what it recommends.

## What is Perplexity, and how do customers use it?

Perplexity is an AI search engine that answers questions in writing and cites its sources. Its help center calls it [an AI-powered search engine](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352155-what-is-perplexity) that uses AI models including OpenAI's GPT models and Anthropic's Claude. Customers use it on the web at perplexity.ai and through its desktop and mobile apps.

### What is the company behind Perplexity?

The company is Perplexity AI, founded in 2022, according to its description in a [January 2025 Tripadvisor announcement](https://tripadvisor.mediaroom.com/press-releases?item=126807).

### How do people access Perplexity?

Customers type a question at perplexity.ai or use one of its apps. The help center has sections for a desktop app and for iOS and Android, including voice assistants. Free users get a limited number of Pro Searches a day, [according to Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work). Every version builds answers from the same web sources.

### The terms you'll see in this guide

- **PerplexityBot** is Perplexity's crawler. It visits websites to build the index that answers are drawn from.
- **Perplexity-User** is a separate fetcher that opens a page when a person asks Perplexity about it.
- **Citations** are the numbered links under each answer that show where a claim came from.
- **robots.txt** is the file at yoursite.com/robots.txt that tells crawlers what they may visit.
- **llms.txt** is a proposed Markdown file that summarises a site for AI tools.

For how these tools fit together, see [SEO vs AEO vs GEO](https://damex.digital/blog/seo-vs-aeo-vs-geo/). Our [Perplexity engine guide](https://damex.digital/ai-engines/perplexity/) keeps the official crawler and data source details in one place.

## Why does Perplexity matter for local businesses now?

Perplexity matters because it answers a large volume of questions and shows its working. Every answer names the pages it relied on, so an owner can see exactly why a competitor was recommended. The figures below come from Perplexity's own pages and one independent test.

> **100 million+.** Perplexity's company description in January 2025 said it answers more than 100 million questions around the world each week. Source: [Tripadvisor Group: Perplexity partnership announcement](https://tripadvisor.mediaroom.com/press-releases?item=126807).

> **Hundreds of billions.** Perplexity says its search index covers hundreds of billions of webpages, and its systems process tens of thousands of index update requests each second. Source: [Perplexity: Introducing the Perplexity Search API](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-the-perplexity-search-api).

> **10 of 10.** In BrightLocal's test of 20 searches across 10 industries, Perplexity used Yelp in every industry it investigated, though not in every search. Source: [BrightLocal: AI search makes local listings more important than ever](https://brightlocal.com/blog/ai-search-using-listings-sources).

> **24 hours.** Perplexity says it may take up to 24 hours for its systems to reflect a change to your robots.txt settings. Source: [Perplexity Docs: Perplexity crawlers](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers).

The number that matters most is your own: how often Perplexity names you for your customers' questions.

## How does Perplexity search and cite its sources?

Perplexity runs a fresh search for each question, picks the most relevant passages and writes an answer with numbered links to the original sources. Its help center says it gathers information from articles, websites and journals, so the answer is only as good as the pages it finds about you.

### It searches each time a question is asked

Perplexity's help center says it [searches the internet in real time](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work). Its Search API post adds that documents are divided into fine-grained units, which are scored against the question. In plain English, Perplexity can lift one paragraph from your services page without the rest, and a paragraph that answers a question in its first sentence is easier to lift.

### It numbers every citation

Each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. If it cites a Yelp page, a local news roundup and two competitor websites, those are the four places you need to be stronger.

### It uses the customer's location

Perplexity's [account settings help](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352990-account-settings) says that if a person doesn't set a location in their profile, responses are based on their network location. So always put your city in the question when you test.

## Where does Perplexity get information about local businesses?

Perplexity reads the open web, including your website, Yelp, other directories, local news and public social posts. It has drawn on Yelp's data directly, and independent tests keep finding Yelp in its local answers. Your job is to make sure every one of those sources tells the same, accurate story about you.

### Yelp and other directories

In March 2024, [Maginative reported](https://www.maginative.com/article/perplexity-enhances-ai-search-engine-with-direct-yelp-data-integration/) that Perplexity began showing Yelp data in local answers, including maps, reviews and photos, through Yelp's data licensing program. In July 2025, [BrightLocal's test](https://brightlocal.com/blog/ai-search-using-listings-sources) found Perplexity used Yelp in all 10 industries it checked, and often drew on MapQuest too. Perplexity also has a [travel partnership with Tripadvisor](https://tripadvisor.mediaroom.com/press-releases?item=126807), announced in January 2025. The pattern is clear: directories are often the page Perplexity cites.

Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews, so don't ask customers for Yelp reviews. Claim the page, complete it, and keep hours, categories, photos and service area current.

### Does AI search crawl social media?

Sometimes, when the content is public. BrightLocal's 2025 test found Instagram cited as a source by Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and YouTube content influencing results for Gemini and Perplexity. A public video of a finished job can be found; a private Facebook group can't. Treat social posts as a supporting source, not a substitute for your website.

### Your own website

Your site is the one source you fully control. If PerplexityBot can't fetch your pages, Perplexity can only describe you through other sites. Our guide to [how AI assistants choose local businesses](https://damex.digital/blog/how-ai-assistants-choose-local-businesses/) covers the same mix of sources across other assistants.

## Should you allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt?

Yes, if you want your website to appear in Perplexity's results. Perplexity's [crawler docs](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers) say PerplexityBot exists to surface and link websites in its search results, and recommend allowing it in robots.txt and permitting its published IP ranges. The same page says it isn't used to crawl content for AI foundation models.

Two lines in your robots.txt file do it.

```
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
```

If your file has no group for PerplexityBot, it follows the `User-agent: *` group, so a `Disallow: /` there blocks it too. Our free [AI crawler checker](https://damex.digital/tools/ai-crawler-checker/) tests a pasted robots.txt against PerplexityBot and every other documented AI crawler.

### PerplexityBot vs Perplexity-User

Perplexity runs two user agents. One builds the index; the other fetches a page when a person asks about it.

| | PerplexityBot | Perplexity-User |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results | Supports user actions, such as fetching a page a person asks about |
| Follows robots.txt | Yes. Perplexity recommends allowing it | Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt, because a user requested the fetch |
| Used to train AI models | No, according to Perplexity | No, according to Perplexity |
| Published IP list | perplexity.ai/perplexitybot.json | perplexity.ai/perplexity-user.json |
| What to do | Allow it in robots.txt and your firewall | Don't block it in your firewall |

### Firewalls and Cloudflare

A firewall can block Perplexity even when robots.txt allows it. Perplexity's docs say that if you use a web application firewall, you may need to explicitly allow its bots, matching each one against its own IP ranges. They add a Cloudflare catch: Bot Fight Mode can't be skipped with custom rules, so it can still challenge Perplexity's bots.

On July 1, 2025, Cloudflare [announced](https://www.cloudflare.com/press/press-releases/2025/cloudflare-just-changed-how-ai-crawlers-scrape-the-internet-at-large/) that every new domain signing up would be asked whether to allow AI crawlers, and that customers can enable crawling at any time. If a web designer clicked through that screen for you, check which way it went.

> **Quick win:** Open yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser today. If you see "Disallow: /" under PerplexityBot or under "User-agent: *", ask whoever runs your site to fix it. If you use Cloudflare, ask them to check the AI crawler and Bot Fight Mode settings too.

![Table comparing PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User on what each does, robots.txt rules, AI training and what a business should do.](https://damex.digital/blog-img/get-your-business-on-perplexity/compare-perplexity-user-agents.webp)

## What is llms.txt, and does a small business need one?

llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI tools a Markdown summary of your site with links to the key pages. A small business doesn't need one to appear on Perplexity. It's cheap to add, but it does nothing if PerplexityBot is blocked, so treat it as a finishing touch rather than a fix.

The [llms.txt proposal](https://llmstxt.org/) was first published by Jeremy Howard in September 2024. Its only required part is an H1 with the site name, usually followed by a short summary in a blockquote and sections of links. Google says you [don't need AI text files](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) to appear in its AI features. Perplexity publishes an llms.txt for its own developer docs, but its crawler page doesn't say PerplexityBot reads them on other sites. Our glossary entry on [llms.txt](https://damex.digital/glossary/llms-txt/) tracks what's confirmed.

### llms.txt vs robots.txt

The two files do different jobs, and only one of them can hide you.

| | robots.txt | llms.txt |
|---|---|---|
| Status | The file Perplexity tells site owners to use to manage PerplexityBot | A proposal, in its authors' own words |
| What it does | Allows or blocks crawlers such as PerplexityBot | Offers AI tools a short guide to your site |
| Can it remove you from Perplexity? | Yes, if it blocks PerplexityBot | No |
| Priority for a local business | Check it first | Optional, after the basics |

### An llms.txt example for a local business

Example: a short file for a plumbing company might look like this.

```
# Example Plumbing Co.
> Licensed plumbers serving Columbus, Ohio and nearby suburbs. Open 24 hours for burst pipes and leaks.
## Services
- [Emergency plumbing](https://example.com/emergency-plumbing/): burst pipes, leaks, no hot water
- [Water heater repair](https://example.com/water-heaters/): tank and tankless
## About
- [Service area and hours](https://example.com/service-area/)
- [Licence and insurance](https://example.com/about/)
```

Keep it short and in step with your site.

## What about the Perplexity Merchant Program and ads?

Neither one gets a service business into local answers. The Merchant Program helps large retailers share product data for shopping answers. Perplexity's ads, as announced in 2024, sit beside answers and are labelled sponsored, and Perplexity says advertisers don't influence what the answer says.

### The Merchant Program is for products

Perplexity's [November 2024 announcement](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/shop-like-a-pro) says the free Merchant Program makes it easy for large retailers to share their product specs. That helps a store selling air purifiers. It does nothing for the HVAC company that installs them.

### Perplexity ads are separate from answers

In [November 2024 Perplexity said](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/why-we-re-experimenting-with-advertising) it was experimenting with ads in the US, formatted as sponsored follow-up questions and paid media beside an answer, clearly marked sponsored. It said answers would not be influenced by advertisers. Formats may change, so check Perplexity's own pages before budgeting, and remember an ad isn't a mention in the answer.

## How do I get my business on Perplexity AI?

Work from access to accuracy to proof. First make sure Perplexity can read your site, then make every source agree, then add the reviews, pages and mentions that give it something specific to cite. Settings come first because they're quick and everything else depends on them.

1. **Let PerplexityBot in.** Check robots.txt for a block under PerplexityBot or `User-agent: *`, then have firewall and Cloudflare settings checked. Allow up to 24 hours.
2. **Make your pages fetchable.** Service pages should load as plain HTML, with no login or pop-up hiding the text. Perplexity can only cite what it can read.
3. **Match your details everywhere.** Use one exact name, address, phone number and hours on your site, Yelp, Google, Bing Places and trade directories. See [NAP consistency](https://damex.digital/glossary/nap-consistency/).
4. **Claim and complete your Yelp page.** Set categories, service area, hours and photos. This page often speaks for you.
5. **Ask every customer for a review.** Ask on Google after every job, without filtering for happy customers or suggesting what to write. Our guide to [getting more Google reviews](https://damex.digital/blog/get-more-google-reviews/) has the rules and templates.
6. **Write answer-first service pages.** Open each page with one sentence that answers the main question, then cover prices, hours, areas and brands. Perplexity scores passages, so each paragraph should stand alone.
7. **Get into the roundups Perplexity already cites.** If a local "best of" list keeps appearing under answers for your trade, contact the writer with your licence, area and reviews. Those are the [LLM citations](https://damex.digital/glossary/llm-citation/) your competitors are winning.
8. **Re-ask the same questions every month.** Compare who gets named and which sources are cited. Three months in the same direction is a trend.

The groundwork is shared with our guide to [getting recommended by ChatGPT](https://damex.digital/blog/how-to-get-recommended-by-chatgpt/).

## How do you test whether Perplexity recommends you?

Ask the questions your customers ask, include your city, and write down who gets named and which sources are cited. Run each question twice, because answers vary between runs. The citations tell you which page to fix next, and the same questions asked every month show whether the fixes worked.

### Prompts to copy

Start broad, then name a job, then check what Perplexity says about you by name.

**Broad question:**

```text
Which roofing companies in Tampa, Florida handle storm leak repairs and have good reviews? Please list your sources.
```

**Specific job:**

```text
Recommend three [trade] companies in [city] for [job], and cite the sources you used for each one.
```

**Trust check:**

```text
Is [your business name] in [city] a licensed and well-reviewed [trade]? What sources say so?
```

**Follow-up:**

```text
Which of these companies offer [emergency service / financing / your insurance plan], and where does it say so?
```

Our [AI visibility self-audit](https://damex.digital/blog/ai-visibility-self-audit/) walks through scoring these answers across every engine.

### What to do when Perplexity gets you wrong

Perplexity's help center says to [use the flag icon below the answer](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10354902-how-can-i-report-incorrect-or-inaccurate-answers), or to open a support ticket with the link to the question and a description of the error. Then fix the source. If a cited directory lists your old phone number, correcting it fixes the next answer too.

**Monthly Perplexity check**

- [ ] Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and confirm PerplexityBot isn't blocked
- [ ] Ask the same 5 to 10 customer questions, each with your city, twice
- [ ] Record whether you're named in each answer
- [ ] List every cited source and note whether you're on it
- [ ] Ask the trust question with your business name and check every detail
- [ ] Flag any wrong answer and fix the page it cited
- [ ] Compare with last month before changing anything else

![Checklist for a monthly Perplexity check covering robots.txt, customer questions, whether you are named, cited sources and wrong answers.](https://damex.digital/blog-img/get-your-business-on-perplexity/checklist-perplexity-monthly.webp)
*Seven checks to run each month: robots.txt, your customer questions, who is named, which sources are cited and what to fix.*

## Example: a plumber's first Perplexity check

Here's how a plumber can turn Perplexity's citations into a short fix list, then read the change a month later without over-reading one result. The numbers are round ones, chosen to show the method.

### Month one

Example: a plumbing company in Columbus asks Perplexity 6 customer questions, twice each, for 6 × 2 = 12 answers. The company is named in 2 of 12, or about 17%. The owner then counts the sources under each answer.

| Example cited source | Answers citing it | Is the company there? | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yelp search page for Columbus plumbers | 9 of 12 | Profile unclaimed, old hours | Claim it, fix hours and categories |
| Competitor websites | 7 of 12 | Not applicable | Write an emergency plumbing page that answers the same questions |
| Local news "best plumbers" roundup | 4 of 12 | Not listed | Contact the writer with licence and reviews |
| Angi | 3 of 12 | Profile, 2 reviews | Complete the profile |
| The company's own website | 0 of 12 | Robots.txt blocks all crawlers | Allow PerplexityBot |

Yelp appears in 9 of 12 answers, or 75%, so it's the biggest lever after robots.txt. The website appears in none, because of a single line in robots.txt.

### Month two

Example: after the fixes, the same 12 answers name the company 5 times, about 42%, which is 3 more than month one. The website now appears as a source in 4 of 12. One month can be noise, so the owner keeps the same questions for a third month.

> **2 → 5 of 12.** Answers naming the company rose from 2 of 12 to 5 of 12 after robots.txt, Yelp and page fixes. (Worked example)

![Example table of sources cited in twelve Perplexity answers for a Columbus plumber, with how often each appears and the next step.](https://damex.digital/blog-img/get-your-business-on-perplexity/compare-example-sources.webp)
*An example of how a plumber counts the sources under 12 Perplexity answers and turns each into a next step.*

## How does this work for each trade?

The groundwork is shared, but each trade gets different questions, and Perplexity cites different pages to answer them. Home service customers ask urgent questions with a job attached, while patients ask about trust, insurance and fit. Here's what to check first for each.

### Home services

### For HVAC companies

HVAC questions on Perplexity can arrive in chains. A homeowner asks for AC repair, then follows up about financing, brands or same-day visits, and each follow-up is a new search. One general services page gives Perplexity nothing to cite for the second question. Give heat pumps, furnaces, AC repair and maintenance plans their own answer-first pages, and name the brands you service in plain text. Our guide to [HVAC companies in ChatGPT](https://damex.digital/blog/hvac-companies-chatgpt/) covers the seasonal questions.

More for HVAC companies: [HVAC marketing and AI visibility](https://damex.digital/industries/hvac/)

### For plumbing companies

A customer can paste a plumber's web address into Perplexity and ask whether it's legitimate. That fetch comes from Perplexity-User, which Perplexity says generally ignores robots.txt but which a firewall can still block. If your security settings challenge it, Perplexity has to answer from other sites instead of your own. State your licence, hours and emergency service area on the page itself. Read [how to show up for emergency plumber near me searches](https://damex.digital/blog/emergency-plumber-near-me/) next.

More for plumbing companies: [Plumbing marketing and AI visibility](https://damex.digital/industries/plumbing/)

### For roofing companies

After a storm, roofing questions turn into trust questions, and local news coverage spikes. Perplexity can cite those articles alongside Yelp and contractor sites. A consistent local address, licence details where your state issues them and reviews mentioning real local jobs give an answer something to trust. Put your storm leak repair process on its own page so Perplexity can cite it directly. See [how roofers get found after a storm](https://damex.digital/blog/roofers-found-after-storm/).

More for roofing companies: [Roofing marketing and AI visibility](https://damex.digital/industries/roofing/)

### Health practices

### For dental practices

Dentistry was one of the industries in BrightLocal's 2025 test, and Perplexity drew on Yelp across all of them. Patients ask about insurance, emergency appointments and new-patient availability, so publish accepted plans and hours in plain text, and keep them identical on Yelp and Healthgrades. Keep review replies general and never confirm someone is a patient. See [how dental practices get named in AI search](https://damex.digital/blog/dental-practices-ai-search/). Privacy rules can vary by state; check with your attorney.

More for dental practices: [Dental marketing and AI visibility](https://damex.digital/industries/dental/)

### For med spas

Perplexity quotes passages, so one claim on a treatment page can travel into an answer without its context. Keep each treatment page to claims you can support, say who performs the treatment and what their credentials are, and keep before-and-after content within the rules that apply to you. Our guide to [med spa advertising rules](https://damex.digital/blog/med-spa-advertising-rules/) explains the limits. Rules vary by state; check with your attorney.

More for med spas: [Med spa marketing and AI visibility](https://damex.digital/industries/med-spa/)

The same approach works for electrical, pest control, auto repair and our other trades.

## What are the common mistakes that keep businesses off Perplexity?

The most common mistake is blocking Perplexity without knowing it, through robots.txt, a firewall or a Cloudflare setting. The others come from treating Perplexity like Google, with a listing to claim and a ranking to buy. Each one below either wastes money or quietly hides you.

- **Blocking every AI bot to stop training.** Perplexity says PerplexityBot isn't used for AI foundation models. Blocking it costs visibility without the protection owners expect.
- **Forgetting the firewall.** robots.txt can say yes while a firewall says no, and Cloudflare's Bot Fight Mode can still challenge Perplexity's bots.
- **Paying for a "Perplexity listing".** Perplexity documents no listing form for local businesses. Ask any seller for the Perplexity page that describes what they submit.
- **Asking for Yelp reviews.** Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews. Claim and complete the page instead.
- **Judging by one answer.** Results vary between runs and locations. Ask the same questions, twice, every month.

## How Damex does it

We treat Perplexity as one of five engines we measure every month, not a separate product. Our team asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot the questions your customers ask about your trade and city, and records which businesses get named.

Then we work on the sources. A specialist fixes your details across the directories AI engines and maps read for your trade, including Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. We write answer-first service and FAQ pages and articles. On Growth and Authority, the reviews program asks customers after each job, with their consent, and replies to every review, and we pitch the local roundups that AI engines read. Every piece of work is checked before it goes out under your name, and a senior marketer owns the result.

Our [AI Visibility service](https://damex.digital/services/ai-visibility/) is the core of every package, with 10 to 50 buyer questions tracked across five engines every month, depending on the package. [Local SEO](https://damex.digital/services/local-seo/) covers listings and pages, and the [Website care](https://damex.digital/services/website-care/) add-on handles your hosted site. Nobody can promise you'll be named, so we count the answers that name you instead. See every package on our [pricing page](https://damex.digital/pricing/).

## FAQs

### How do I get my business on Perplexity?

Make sure PerplexityBot can crawl your website, keep your name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere, complete your Yelp and trade directory profiles, ask every customer for a review and write service pages that answer questions in the first sentence. Then ask Perplexity your customers' questions and fix the sources it cites.

### How do I get listed on Perplexity for free?

There's no listing to fill in, free or paid. Perplexity finds businesses by searching the web, so the free route is a crawlable website and accurate profiles on the sites it already cites, such as Yelp and your trade's directories.

### Can I add my business through the Perplexity app?

No. The Perplexity apps and website are for asking questions. Nothing in them lets a business add itself. The app reads the same web sources as the website, so the same fixes apply.

### Is the Perplexity Merchant Program for local service businesses?

No. Perplexity's announcement describes it as a free way for large retailers to share product specs for shopping answers. It isn't built for service businesses such as HVAC, plumbing or dental.

### Does allowing PerplexityBot mean my site trains AI models?

Perplexity says PerplexityBot is used to surface and link websites in its search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.

### What's the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt is an established standard that tells crawlers such as PerplexityBot what they may fetch. llms.txt is a proposal for a Markdown summary of your site for AI tools to read. robots.txt controls access; llms.txt only offers a guide.

### Does my small business need an llms.txt file?

It isn't required. Google says you don't need AI text files to appear in its AI features, and Perplexity's crawler page doesn't say PerplexityBot reads them. It's cheap to publish, but fix robots.txt, listings and pages first.

### Does Perplexity use Yelp?

Maginative reported in March 2024 that Perplexity began showing Yelp maps, reviews and photos in local answers. In BrightLocal's July 2025 test, Perplexity used Yelp in all 10 industries it checked, though not in every search.

### Can I pay to appear in Perplexity answers?

Not in the answer itself. When Perplexity announced ads in November 2024, it said they would be labelled sponsored and that advertisers would not influence the content of answers. Check Perplexity's own pages for what is on offer today.

### How soon will Perplexity notice my changes?

Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to reflect. Profile and review changes depend on when it next reads those pages, so measure monthly rather than daily.

### Is there a trick on Reddit for getting listed on Perplexity AI?

Not one Perplexity documents. Its own pages describe a crawler, a retail Merchant Program and ads, and none of them is a local listing. If a thread or a seller claims a submission form exists, ask for the Perplexity page that describes it.

### What can I do if Perplexity says something wrong about my business?

Perplexity's help center says to use the flag icon below the answer or open a support ticket with the link to the question. Then fix the cited page that carried the wrong detail, because that is what the next answer will read.
