# How Google AI Overviews and AI Mode finds local businesses

> Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google Search, so a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before they can use it. Google says there are no extra requirements, no special markup and no AI text files to add. For local questions it draws on its business information, and it advises keeping your Business Profile up to date.

## Crawlers and user agents

| User agent | Purpose | Docs |
|---|---|---|
| `Googlebot` | Crawls for Google Search, which includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control. | [Docs](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) |
| `Google-Extended` | A robots.txt token, not a crawler. Covers Gemini training and grounding. Google says it doesn't affect inclusion in Search. | [Docs](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/google-common-crawlers) |

## Check what it says about your business

```text
Who does [job] near [neighbourhood], [city]? I need someone open now with good reviews.
```

## What to fix first

1. **Complete your Business Profile.** Hours, categories, services and photos. Google's guidance for AI features names Business Profile directly. See [google-business-profile](https://damex.digital/sources/google-business-profile/).
2. **Make sure pages can show a snippet.** A page blocked by noindex or nosnippet can't be used. Check your service pages in Search Console.
3. **Cover the follow-up questions.** Because one question fans out into related searches, pages that answer cost, timing and area questions get more chances to be used.
4. **Fix your other listings.** Google says it also uses licensed third-party data, so wrong details on directories can work against you. See [bing-places](https://damex.digital/sources/bing-places/).

## FAQs
